What is Botulinum toxin?

BOTOX® and Dysport® are the highly purified muscle protein (botulinum toxin-a), derived from the bacterium, Clostridium Botulinum. The toxin blocks the chemical signal between the muscle and the nerve, leading to temporary paralysis of the muscle. The paralysis occurs over 1 to 5 days and peaks within two weeks. Results last from three to six months. The effect gradually wears off, allowing the dynamic wrinkle to return.

What is the difference between BOTOX® and Dysport®?

In regards to safety, time to on-set, and efficacy, there is minimal difference between these two treatments. Some people claim to get better results with one over the other, but in our experience, there is very little significant difference. Some people can build up an immunity to one product. In this case, we recommend trying the alternative product. It is important to note that these products are measured differently. Often times you will see the price for Dysport® advertised at about ½ the price of BOTOX®. Be advised that you will need twice as much Dysport® compared to BOTOX®, so in they end, they are generally the same price.

What are BOTOX® / Dysport® used for?

BOTOX® and Dysport® diminish or eliminate so-called dynamic wrinkles in the face. BOTOX® and Dysport® act by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. BOTOX® and Dysport® are injected into the muscle and prevent the muscle from contracting by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle. Because the muscle cannot contract, the wrinkle relaxes.

BOTOX® and Dysport® are mainly used to treat dynamic wrinkles in the upper third of the face. However, many physicians use them to cosmetically treat other areas of the face and neck. They have been used for many years in treating clients with muscular diseases where the muscles are in spasm. For about 11 years, BOTOX® has been used in cosmetic aesthetic enhancement to treat hyperfunctional facial lines, typically the Glabella (the vertical lines between the eyebrows), horizontal forehead wrinkles, and lines at the corners of your eyes (crow’s feet). BOTOX® and Dysport® can also be used on bunny lines on the nose, vertical lip lines (smokers lines), chin dimpling, and the vertical neck bands as well. It can also be used to shape or lift the eyebrows and raise the corners of the mouth. Non-cosmetic use of BOTOX® include treatment of headaches and localized excessive sweating, especially of the armpits. BOTOX® and Dysport® are not as effective on so-called static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are better treated with dermal fillers.

What are hyperfunctional facial lines?

These are expression lines such as frown lines, brow lines, crow’s feet and bunny lines (vertical lines across the bridge of the nose) that become prominent with age, sun damage, and excessive facial muscle activity.

How does BOTOX® / Dysport® work?

BOTOX® and Dysport® are injected into a targeted facial expression muscle, blocking impulses from the nerve to the muscle, thereby relaxing the muscle so it does not contract. This, in turn, causes the overlying skin to become smoother, with fewer lines and wrinkles. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression and sensation to be unaffected.

Are BOTOX® and Dysport® approved by the FDA?

Yes, BOTOX® is approved by the FDA as a cosmetic and medical treatment. BOTOX® was first approved by the FDA in 1989 as a medical treatment for 2 eye disorders namely Blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking) and Strabismus (misaligned eyes). In 2000, the FDA approved BOTOX® to treat cervical dystonia, a neurological disorder that causes severe shoulder and neck muscles contraction. Botox® was approved by the FDA as a cosmetic treatment in April of 2002. In 2004, the FDA approved Botox® as a treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis for patients who do not respond positively to topical prescription drugs. In 2009, the FDA approved Dysport® for treatment of glabellar (frown) lines.

Are BOTOX® / Dysport® treatments painful?

BOTOX® and Dysport® are injected directly into the muscle that underlies the dynamic wrinkle. The muscle injections are given with a very small needle so there is only minimal discomfort. The entire procedure takes about 10-15 minutes. In some cases, ice is used to relieve any discomfort you may experience before and after treatment.

How many BOTOX® / Dysport® treatments will I need and how long will it last?

Usually, one treatment is all that is needed, and the effect typically lasts for 3-4 months and may last longer in certain individuals. The treatment may be repeated as often as desired.

How long before I can return to my usual activities?

Since the procedure is non-surgical, no recovery time is needed; clients can return to work or other activities immediately. Many clients have even received BOTOX® and Dysport® injections on their lunch breaks.

What are the side effects and risks of BOTOX® / Dysport® treatment?

The most common side effects of BOTOX® and Dysport® treatment are infrequent and generally mild and temporary to include: headache, flu-like symptoms, temporary eyelid or eyebrow droop, and nausea. Treatment side effects can include bruising at the injection site. Platinum Aesthetics Mobile MedSpa uses only FDA-approved BOTOX® and Dysport® brand.

Who is a candidate for BOTOX® / Dysport®?

BOTOX® and Dysport® treatments are an ideal option for men and women who want to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles around their eyes, between the eyebrows, and on their forehead and may not need or cannot afford a more invasive, surgical solution. Their effects can produce a dramatic improvement in appearance, making you look younger and more vibrant almost immediately.
Although it has not been linked to the occurrence of birth defects or other serious side effects, BOTOX® and Dysport® injections are not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and for those with neurological disorders.

Is there any special preparation prior to BOTOX® / Dysport® treatment?

You should avoid taking Aspirin, Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) such as Motrin, Vitamin E, Ginger, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng, and Garlic 10-14 days prior to the treatment. These drugs and herbs may cause excessive bleeding or bruising. If you have a special event or vacation coming up, it is recommended to schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks in advance.

Who cannot have BOTOX® / Dysport® injections?

Do not use botulinum toxin-a if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any of its ingredients, or suffer from any neurological disorders such as Myasthenia Gravis.

What can and can’t I do after the treatment?

What you do after your treatment and how you take care of your skin is very important. Apply a cold compress to the areas treated (avoiding pressure) as this helps reduce swelling and the potential for bruising. Avoid applying pressure or massaging the treated areas for a few hours after the procedure. This may disperse the botulinum toxin into undesired areas. Avoid straining, heavy lifting, and/or vigorous exercise for 3-4 hours following treatment. Avoid lying down or bending over for 3-4 hours after treatment as this may allow the botulinum toxin to disperse in undesired directions. You may resume other normal activities/routines immediately. You may take acetaminophen/Tylenol if you experience any mild tenderness or discomfort. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen products as they may increase your potential to bruise. Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatment as it may cause additional bruising and or bleeding. Avoid extended UV exposure until any redness/swelling has subsided. If you get a bruise, topical vitamin K and arnica can help. Green or yellow concealers can also help cover up the bruises.
